Our reliance on water when planning for potential contingencies
The actual cost of your mains water supply is minimal when compared to its true value.
Water not only hydrates us, it is also an expert in cooling industrial processes and transferring heat to where it is required. Water removes contaminates, it’s also a food ingredient.
What would you do if your company's water supply was lost right now?
If you have a business continuity plan which states that in the event of a water loss or contamination incident, a nominated person is to inform the respective water supply company about the problem, you have at least acknowledged the risks attached to losing your water supply.
However, does your plan document who will provide you with an emergency water supply, how long you can continue to trade until they get there, how does that water supplier physically deliver the water into your building?
What costs would you incur if you lost your water supply?
Without an effective water continuity plan, your company is at risk of:
- Lost sales revenue and profit
- Delayed income and profit
- Contractual penalties for not meeting deadlines
- Customer dissatisfaction leading to customer defection
- Regulatory fines
- Increased expenses due to overtime and/or outsourcing to catch up production schedules

What question should you potentially be asking right now?
If your employees are unable to use the welfare facilities, did you know that health and safety regulations dictate that they should be sent home?
Is the temporary closure of your business an option?
Does your water utility company guarantee that your water supply will not be interrupted, or do they assure a response if it is? Ask them!
What are the answers? Do you have a plan A?
If the answer you get, to the questions raised above are not what you hoped to hear, please speak to one of our emergency planning team by calling 01258 830324 / 0800 1448215.
In the UK we take the continuity of the mains water supply for granted, unlike in many countries in the developing world where a supply of water may only be available for a limited period of time.
The UK water utility companies have an obligation to provide 10 litres of clean, wholesome water per person, every day. If their pipe network fails, alternative water supplies are made available, either with a bottled water supply or with water tankers, water tanks and water bowsers being deployed to the affected areas.
Companies, however, do not have the same rights as private individuals.
